Why Technology is the Emerging Superpower
Technology is one of the most important things to have ever happened to human evolution. There are new technological benefits to embrace every day that make our living and working more accessible and better. In the digital transformation field where I work, technology makes our communication much more productive. It also helps us stand out from other competitors because we know creative and advanced mechanisms that are highly effective. However, that’s not why I write this book because if you search online, you will find a long list of why technology advancement is the engine of economic growth and how critical digital transformation is. I’ll stop here and take a break from being a digital advocate.
On the other hand, technological advancements come with incredible opportunities and high risks. Because of the increased unknowns that come out of uncertainties, many people still resist the changes that technology is trying to bring. I am an advocator for digital innovations that serve humanity, but at the same time, I am also anti-digital, especially when privacy is concerned. I never thought about writing a book about the digital revolution and its two sides until the pandemic shakes up the way we live overnight.
The Virtual Takeover
The pandemic had a crushing effect on national economies worldwide and forced us all to reset. It’s effortless to see that a massive batch of new technological advances and services swiftly followed every economic recession in the last century. In 1930 we got the AM Radio, the internet in the early 2000s, and we got Smartphones around 2008/2009. Now, there is another large influx of technologies caused by the COVID-19 recession.
But this pandemic differs from others because instead of gradual change, the world was transformed overnight. The human transformation system is built on the factor of time, and because of the incredible speed and massive scale of COVID-19’s effect on the world, it differs from others. That’s why the results of the pandemic served as both an equalizer and an accelerator.
Due to the pandemic, there was a rapid process of people dumping their everyday living habits and taking up a whole new virtual world. The world has now begun to take a form that was not expected until at least the next five years. The swift transition took place because technology has been available. It was just a matter of time before technology took over our lives, and all the pandemic did was accelerate the takeover.
If the pace of the world before the coronavirus pandemic already seemed drastic, then now the luxury of time has gone entirely. Businesses that had previously created digital strategies to work over a couple of years must now scale down those strategies to fit into just a few weeks or months. We had the opportunity to glimpse into the future, especially regarding technological advances being at the forefront of everything.
The Digital Empire
We have entered a new reality, where absolute authority is in the hands of technology giants who control the data. These days more than ever, data is the actual power, and it will get even more potent in the coming years. Your digital footprint, deleted comments, browsing history, and every online activity is in the hands of these giants, and their rich information centers are full of information about activities from users all over the world. In 2020, over 300 million people came online for the first time. Over 60% of the world’s population lives on the internet for an average of seven hours a day.
We all belong to a massive digital empire that is ruled by whoever controls our data, and we need to change the mindset that we use to deal with technology and new digital implementations. As digital citizens, we need to know that you are shaping a world driven by technological advances and how we interact with this technology every time we get on the internet. The problem is that many of us are not ready for the digital world; we find it so easy to give away personal information for email services or even just weather reports while accepting any information that shows up on the screen.
One of the most mind-boggling things I’ve noticed is how technology subtly controls the things we do and how we act. It first made us feel like we were in complete control of what we were doing and that we were the ones controlling technology when in reality, it is the other way around. We could sacrifice so much in exchange for technology access.
